One Killed in Israel After Sinkhole Opens Up in Swimming Pool

One man was killed and another injured when a sinkhole opened up in the bottom of a swimming pool during a party at a house in Karmei Yosef, a settlement in the Judean foothills, or Shfela, in Israel on Thursday, July 21, officials said.

A 32-year-old man named in Israeli reports as Klil Kimhi was sucked into the hole by receding waters. His body was found after a complex four-hour operation, according to Israeli media. The recovery operation was complicated by fears that the unstable ground could produce further collapses, reports said.

Israel’s national ambulance service, Magen David Adom, said a second man, aged 34, managed to escape and sustained only minor injuries. Credit: ZAKA/Israel Fire and Rescue Authority via Storyful
