This One-of-a-Kind Bugatti Chiron Has a Paint Job Inspired by the Legendary Type 55

Production of the Bugatti Chiron hasn’t wrapped up just yet, which means there’s still time to build a few more one-offs.

The French marque has just unveiled a head-turning Chiron Super Sport called the “55 1 of 1.” The black and yellow hypercar has a striking paint job inspired by one of the most important vehicles from the brand’s long history—the Type 55.

That car debuted in 1932 and was Bugatti’s first Super Sport. It featured a 2.3-liter straight-eight derived from the one in the company’s Type 51 endurance racer. The road car’s mill may have been detuned but still had enough power to reach a top speed of 112 mph. But its most memorable feature is its Jean Bugatti-designed body. The two-seat roadster is easily one of the most beautiful cars of all time.

The owner of this one-of-a-kind Chiron wanted their vehicle to wear the colors most closely associated with the Type 55. There’s more to the car’s stunning paint job than a mix of black and yellow, though. The Chiron is much larger than the Type 55 so the owner worked with Bugatti’s Sur Mesure customization team to come up with several visual details that break up the vehicle’s expansive surfaces. These include a black centerline, a fading “55” pattern above the lights and across the wheel arches, as well as special 10-spoke wheels. The car’s name has also been hand-painted onto the bottom of its rear wing.

The color scheme carries over to the interior of the vehicle, though black is the more dominant hue. The cabin’s two seats are covered with quilted leather with contrast stitching and the “55” logo from the exterior is visible everywhere you look.

While the exterior and interior have been heavily customized, the rest of the 55 1 of 1 is a classic Bugatti Chiron Super Sport. That means that the company’s outgoing 8.0-liter W-16 is sitting in the engine bay. The brawny mill produces 1,578 hp and 1,180 ft lbs of torque. All that grunt means the hypercar can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds and hit a top speed of 273 mph.

Bugatti didn’t say how much the owner of the Chiron Super Sport “55 1 of 1” paid for their Type 55 tribute. We’d be willing to bet that they spent well over the $3.7 million starting price that makes the hypercar one of the world’s most expensive vehicles, though.
