If you’ve spent any time at all on Reddit, then you you’ve seen SpongeBob SquarePants fan theoriesand SpongeBob SquarePants jokes, and SpongeBob SquarePants memes, and SpongeBob SquarePants philosophy…and so on and so forth, until the end of internet time.

So it’s no surprise that on Tuesday, January 3rd, one Redditor posted a shower thought (the best part of Reddit, in our oh-so-humble opinion) that really got our post-holiday brains working — if SpongeBob is a sponge, why on earth doesn’t he float?!

Lucky for us who need our SquarePants to be as accurate as possible at all times (because we all know sponges really do wear pants, live in pineapples, work as fry cooks, and have pet snails named Gary), there’s a relatively simple answer for this: SpongeBob is a sea sponge, not an artificial cleaning sponge created by human beings…though he does physically resemble an artificial cleaning sponge created by human beings, so this Redditor’s original question was entirely valid.

Also, though SpongeBob has been shown many times physically using his body to clean things, the show is still in the clear: Sea sponges have been used as cleaning tools by humans for a long time, which is how we got the idea to mass produce them artificially.

So if anything, Sir or Madame Redditor, the only gripe you should have with Nickelodeon is with SpongeBob’s coloring — his artificial shade of yellow could never be found living in a pineapple under the sea, because any sponge that color would most definitely float.
