One of the UK's youngest convicted murderers stabbed another prisoner in a mass brawl behind bars.

Petri Kurti stabbed the inmate with a sharpened rod at a Welsh jail during a mass brawl which saw four prisoners targeting fellow inmates. Prison officers were also injured in the incident.

The 22-year-old was handed a life sentence for murdering Glynis Bensley, 47, when he was 13 years old in a violent robbery in 2014. He and inmates Darren Pearce, 24, Cairo Williams, 23, and James Logan, 38, were involved in a violent disorder at HMP Parc in Bridgend on June 4, 2022.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday heard Kurti, Pearce and Williams made their way to the third landing of the Bravo Two unit of the prison. Williams approached prisoner Oliver Rundu and they began fighting each other, using tinned tuna in socks as makeshift weapons - Wales Online reports.

Shortly after this a fight broke out, with Kurti and Pearce attacking prisoner Tekli Gebray. During a trial, a prison officer described Kurti stabbing Mr Gebray with a sharpened metal rod, as Pearce punched the victim several times to the face and body. Two officers tried to separate them but were caught in the pushing and shoving, with one of them suffering broken ribs after colliding with railings.

Logan became involved in the brawl, and repeatedly punched Mr Rundu to the head as the victim was lying face down on the floor. He was told to stop by an officer and was taken back to his cell.

As a result of the attack, Mr Gebray's face and clothing was covered in blood and he had visible injuries. He refused to provide a statement to the prison or the police.

The defendants later pleaded guilty to a charge of violent disorder, and Mr Rundu was found not guilty of violent disorder, having been found by the jury to have been lawfully defending himself. All of the defendants have since been moved to different prisons.

Sentencing, Judge Shoman Khan told the defendants: "Prison officers have a duty to reduce crime, keep each inmate safe and to keep order in the prison. One officer was hurt while trying to prevent escalation... It's concerning inmates may have been targeted in prison. The prison regime is harsh by nature and those serving a sentence should be able to serve their sentence without fear of violence or threats of violence.

Kurti was sentenced to a total of three years and eight months imprisonment. Pearce was sentenced to a total of two years imprisonment. Williams was sentenced to two years imprisonment. Logan was sentenced to seven months imprisonment. Each defendant will serve their sentence concurrent with the sentence they are already serving.
