Only Murders in the Building season 2 spoilers follow.

Only Murders in the Building season three has already been confirmed, but we don't yet have a confirmed release date for the next instalment.

Just when they thought they were home free, the second season gave the Only Murders in the Building gang a new dead body crash-landing into their lives. But who wants a quiet life anyway, especially in New York when you have a successful podcast to maintain?

In the season-two finale, Mabel, Chris and Oliver are part of a huge Broadway crowd who stand by and watch as Paul freaking Rudd (well… Ben Glenroy in this world) collapses and dies live on stage for seemingly no reason.

Yet somehow, everyone knows there is foul play afoot. Question is, who the hell is behind it and why? This sounds like a case only a group of nosey podcasters can solve. But is a season three coming and when can we expect it?

Here's everything you need to know about Only Murders in the Building season 3.

As mentioned above, while we know Only Murders in the Building season three is on its way, we don't quite know when yet.

On the announcement, Craig Erwich, President of Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment, said: "Only Murders in the Building is a true crown jewel of our slate. Its appeal across generations, the intersection of humour and heart, and truly original approach are a hallmark of and testament of Dan, John, Steve, Marty and Selena's work.

"We are grateful to be able to continue telling the stories of Charles, Oliver and Mabel to viewers that have consistently shown us they crave more of this story."

While the exact release date is not yet known, the team do seem to have a more speedy turnaround than most when it comes to this comedy-drama. Season one ran from August to October 2021, while season two ran from June to August 2022.

At a guesstimate, we reckon it'll likely stick to a similar release time to season two, should everything go well. When we hear anything official, we'll let you know.

Obviously Only Murders just wouldn't work without Steve Martin as Charles, Martin Short as Oliver and Selena Gomez as Mabel. Seeing as they were witness to what happened to Ben Glenroy, and have a podcast at their disposal to investigate this major crime, you can be sure they'll be back.

Martin, who is also producer on the show, recently concerned fans by hinting that he may have been looking ahead to retirement. But thankfully, it sounded as though he'd be looking to complete his work on Only Murders first.

"When this television show is done, I’m not going to seek others," he told The Hollywood Reporter in August. "I'm not going to seek other movies. I don't want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it."

He later provided some clarification on the comments, during a chat with E! on the Emmys' red carpet.

"It's a little overstated," Martin said. "They asked me, 'Do you think about retirement?' I said, 'Well this is it. I'm doing a television show, I've got a book coming out and I'm touring with [Short]'. That kind of is my retirement – that's what it's going to look like."

But back to season three. Paul Rudd, who is our new resident murder victim Ben, is confirmed to return, with his death explained via flashbacks. Photos from the set show him with some fetching blonde highlights alongside a new cast member, The Watcher's Caitlin Hammond, whose role is yet to be revealed.

Tina Fey will likely be back as Cinda Canning, too because after all… why would she miss this opportunity to dig into a celebrity's death? Maybe she'll even team up with the OGs.

Only Murders in the Building is adding some new blood to its cast lineup with the onboarding of Grey's Anatomy star Jesse Williams.

Better known for his role as Dr Jackson Avery, Williams has retired his surgical scrubs after his Grey's happy ending which saw him reunite with his ex-wife Dr April Kepner after what can only be described as a severely rocky romantic road.

Williams will now sink his teeth into his role as documentarian. Or so it has been reported. It seems he will develop a particular interest in the case that will rock the apartment building and its residents.

Of course, Amy Schumer appeared in the second season – and it turns out she was a last minute swap-in, according to series co-creator John Hoffman (via Salon).

"We had one gigantic star who for a moment was going to do it," Hoffman said. "And then another very big star who reached out to us and wanted to do it, but a COVID situation kept that from happening at the last minute – really, at the last minute, I'll be honest. And then it was this lovely thing of, 'Oh God, we're up against it.' Amy happily jumped in and saved our asses and was absolutely stone-cold brilliant."

"And I will tell you, just as a little bit of a tease, that beyond the surprise at the end of the season, or where we might be going next season with our guest star, it's only gotten crazier for season three. And there's quite an amazing development coming."

That amazing development has probably been revealed – three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep is joining Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez in New York, though it is unclear whether she will be playing a new resident at the Arconia.

A tweet from the show's official account confirmed her casting: "It is an HONOR to have Meryl in our building!" Meanwhile, Steve Martin shared a photo of himself with Meryl, Paul Rudd, Martin Short and Selena Gomez along with the caption: "A cast to dream of."

A wedding! A wedding? Two weddings? Big teases lie ahead.

Only Murders season three will likely pick up where we left off – a year on from solving Bunny Folger's murder, and in the theatre where Ben lies dead.

As the team try to figure out the truth, it will likely be a similar format to its predecessors, where there will be flashbacks as the trio try to piece together what exactly happened to him.

Was he actually murdered, or was there something more to it? What exactly did Charles threaten him about? What did Ben actually do to make Charles, a legit sweetheart, hate him with such a passion?

(Our money is on something to do with Mabel… but that's just speculation right now.)
