An update has been given on when two popular tourist attractions in Kent should re-open. Eastgate Hospital and the Franciscan Gardens, found next to each other in Canterbury city centre, along the High Street, are undergoing extensive repairs and remain closed to the public.

It had been hoped the Franciscan Gardens would have re-opened at the start of spring, however ongoing "urgent repairs" have prevented this from happening. Those eagerly awaiting the re-opening of the landmarks will need to wait a while longer, with bosses now confirming one of the sites will remain shut until next year.

Christopher Robinson, chairman of Eastbridge Hospital, said: “We have entered 2024 with extensive and urgent repairs needed to both Eastbridge Hospital and Franciscan Gardens, forcing a closure of both sites while these works are carried out. The winter weather has delayed the works to the garden’s river wall considerably, unfortunately resulting in a much later reopening date than previously hoped.

“For Eastbridge Hospital, an infestation of deathwatch beetle in the upper chapel along with the repair of one of the walls and urgent refectory roof repairs has further delayed any foreseeable reopening. Eastbridge will not open until mid 2025.”

The costs of these restoration works has now reached almost £350,000, with another £175,000 required for the river wall repairs. There is hope however that the Franciscan Gardens will re-open this summer.

The chairman added: “The cost of these considerable repairs has been a huge financial strain on our charity and we are seeking grants and donations wherever possible to help us continue with this necessary work. If works can progress as envisaged, we are now looking at reopening the gardens at the beginning of June 2024.”

These gardens have been described as a "haven away from the bustle of Canterbury’s busy streets" and were first planted in 2000. Over the centuries the plot of land, once owned by the Franciscans after arriving in Canterbury from Italy in the 13th century, has served many roles including an estate for a wealthy Tudor family, a tea garden and a commercial plant nursery.

Extensive work has been completed to craft and restore the original Franciscan Friary garden from a derelict space to the picturesque landmark that now stands as a heritage site within the city centre. Overlooking the River Stour, the 1.5 acre gardens feature a 13th century chapel and, once re-opened, welcomes guests at a price of £5 per person.

Eastgate Hospital meanwhile is a hospital in the traditional sense in that it is short for hospitality. Founded in the 12th century, when open it is one of 10 almshouses still functioning and providing accommodation in Canterbury.

It has helped house elderly citizens as well as Ukrainian refugees in rooms that are inaccessible to the public, and the site is Grade-I listed. When opened, the landmark welcomes visitors at an entry price of £4.50 for adults, with guided tours available which tell the fascinating story of this historic attraction.
