The Orville is in need of a fan campaign to initiate season 4, according to star Chad Coleman.

It's been almost a full year since the show's third season – titled The Orville: New Horizons – yet there's still no official word as far as its future goes.

Citing the fate of former Syfy series The Expanse, which was ultimately saved by Prime Video, Coleman told Bleeding Cool: "We want everybody else to generate to that level, and that's why I tell people all the time for The Orville, 'How about you guys? You put a campaign together to get somebody to fly a plane around and say: 'Renew it'.

"How about we do a social media push where millions of people let them know? That's the thing we're looking for because it happened with The Expanse when it was tangible and on Syfy.

"That's how it got picked up on Prime because of movements like that. Again, another rabid fanbase."

Addressing the situation last summer, The Orville creator and leading man Seth MacFarlane revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the "entire cast" is praying for another stab at this sci-fi story.

"It's a big question mark for a lot of reasons. It's not an inexpensive show to produce. It requires an ambitious budget. But the flip side of that is, it's no more ambitious than half the other streaming shows on television," he said.

"It really is going to depend on audience response, on whether the show gets discovered.

"I still think there are a lot of people who just don't know that we're out there and don't really quite know what we are, and when people sit down and watch the show, they're almost always surprised and it almost always upends their expectations."

The Orville streams on Hulu in the US. In the UK, you can watch it on STAR on Disney+.
