Oscar Viewers Speculate About Emma Stone’s Reaction to Jimmy Kimmel’s ‘Poor Things’ Joke

Many 2024 Oscar viewers found themselves captivated by speculation about what Emma Stone said to her husband after Jimmy Kimmel joked about the nudity in Poor Things during the awards show on Sunday.

Following a montage dedicated to the 11-time nominated film, Oscars host Kimmel quipped to the crowd that, “Those were all the parts of Poor Things that we’re allowed to show on TV.”

The joke was ostensibly a reference to the level of sex and nudity in the Stone-led film, and many online felt that her reaction implied she was displeased with Kimmel’s comments. Some speculated she had turned to her husband next to her, Dave McCary, and said, “Oh my God.” Others believed she was saying, “What a prick.”

Representatives for Stone did not immediately respond to requests for clarification on her reaction.

Stone is nominated for best actress for her performance as Bella Baxter in Poor Things, the Yorgos Lanthimos-directed movie for which Stone is also a producer. The film is up for 11 Oscars in total, including best picture, the second most of any film behind Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

In the movie, Stone’s Bella begins as an undeveloped human whose brain has been transplanted into the body of a woman. As she matures, she encounters a range of men seeking to control her, including characters played by Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe and Ramy Youssef. Ruffalo is also nominated for his performance. At the start of this weekend, Poor Things was the highest-grossing limited release of 2023, at $105 million, and Lanthimos’ top-grossing film ever.
