Oscars 2019 might not have a host at all

Following Kevin Hart's exit as Oscars 2019 host, there's apparently a chance that next year's ceremony won't have a host at all.

According to Variety, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences is exploring options to replace Hart, with one of them including going without a host and another using several celebrities to co-host the ceremony.

TV network ABC and the Academy haven't responded to Variety's report about the search for a new host.

Last week, Hart stepped down from the role of Oscars 2019 host only days after he was announced, following a number of old homophobic tweets resurfacing. In an Instagram video before his exit, Hart revealed that the Academy asked him to apologise.

"I chose to pass, I passed on the apology," he explained. "The reason why I've passed is that I've addressed it several times."

A few hours later, Hart confirmed on Twitter that he had stepped down as Oscars host and apologised to the LGBTQ+ community for his "insensitive words", adding: "I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists.

"I'm sorry that I hurt people... I am evolving and want to continue to do so. My goal is to bring people together not tear us apart. Much love & appreciation to the Academy. I hope we can meet again."

The 90th annual Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019.
