Outdoor cinema screenings and fairground fun for all is coming to Loughborough later this month. Organisers say there will be a “huge variety” of activities for everyone to take part in.

The celebrations, which will take place at Loughborough’s Southfields Park, are a specially-created brand new event under the banner of Celebrating Charnwood. The two-day spectacle will run across the Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30 weekend.

The new event coincides with events to mark Charnwood Borough’s Council’s 50th anniversary, with an outdoor cinema screening among the key highlights. Big screen showings of film favourites The Greatest Showman and cultural classics like Grease will be among those on the bill.

The first day of the two-day event, which is organised by Charnwood Borough Council and supported by sponsors Loughborough Schools Foundation, also coincides with Armed Forces Day 2024. Southfields Park will see a number of military personnel at the park, while activities will also run throughout the day with the support of military vehicles who will also be on show.

A family-focused fairground will also be at the park across the weekend as well as a number of food and drink stalls. The borough council are still looking for stallholders for the event.

Chris Grace, the council’s head of economic development and regeneration, said: “We are excited to launch the Celebrating Charnwood event which will bring visitors and residents to Southfields Park in what I’m sure will be an enjoyable and memorable weekend. We have expanded the events programme for 2024 and this new event offers visitors huge variety. With the outdoor cinema screen, fairground rides and different activities, there is certainly something for all the family to enjoy.”

The outdoor cinema will screen films at these times. Organisers have warned that these timings are subject to change:

Saturday, June 29:

  • Wonka - 12.30pm

  • The Greatest Showman - 3pm

  • Mamma Mia! - 5.30pm

Sunday, June 30:

  • Trolls Band Together - 10.30am

  • Matilda the Musical - 1pm

  • Grease - 3.30pm

Celebrating Charnwood runs from 12pm to 8pm on June 20 and from 12pm to 6pm on June 30. More information can be found on Charnwood Borough Council’s website.
