Outlander star Brian McCardie died suddenly on Sunday, with his sister confirming the tragic news on social media.

The Motherwell-born star's death was confirmed just weeks after his appearance in the Blood of My Blood spin-off was confirmed.

McCardie played Sir Marcus MacRannoch in an episode of Outlander and had only recently joined the cast of the Outlander prequel Blood of My Blood, in which he was cast as the chief of Clan Grant.

Starz network revealed McCardie was filming in Scotland alongside the likes of Sara Vickers, Harriet Slater, Jamie Roy and Peter Mullan in the upcoming series, which centres around the lives of Outlander character Jamie Fraser’s parents.

With filming for the show kicking off in March, McCardie's unexpected death has shocked the cast, with stars taking to social media to share their poignant tributes.

Jamie Roy, who will portray Brian Fraser in Outlander: Blood Of My Blood, reflected on his brief time working on set with the late actor and encouraged fans to watch his previous work.

Alongside a photo of McCardie on his Instagram story, Roy stated: “In the handful of times I got to meet Brian through BOB, he always left me grinning.

“He was charming, kind and inherently generous soul and I’m very glad to have had the pleasure.

“I never got the chance to tell him that he was in the movie that made me want to act in the first place [Filth]."

Roy continued: “If you have a spare couple of hours, do yourself a favor and give it a watch. He’s brilliant. Rest in peace, Brian X.”

Sophie Skelton, who stars as Brianna Fraser, also paid tribute to the late star.

Taking to her Instagram Stories, she penned: "Really sorry to hear of the passing of a fellow @outlander_starz cast mate, Brian McCardie. Sending love to his friends, family and fans. Rest in peace to this Scottish legend."

As well as his role in Outlander, McCardie is also well-recognised for his memorable role in the acclaimed police drama Line of Duty as crime boss Tommy Hunter.

He also starred in the British prison drama Time alongside Sean Bean and Stephen Graham.

The late actor’s sister Sarah took to X to confirm McCardie’s death: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian James McCardie, beloved son, brother, uncle and dear friend to so many.

“Brian passed away suddenly at home on Sunday 28th April. A wonderful and passionate actor on stage and screen, Brian loved his work and touched many lives, and is gone much too soon.

“We love him and will miss him greatly; please remember Brian in your thoughts.”

She further informed fans that details about her late brother's funeral would be released in the upcoming days.
