Again told in three languages — Korean, Japanese, and English — and consisting of another eight episodes, Pachinko Season 2 will launch on Friday, Aug. 23 with one episode, followed by weekly releases through Oct. 11.
Based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Min Jin Lee and epic in scope, Pachinko chronicles the hopes and dreams of a Korean immigrant family across four generations as they leave their homeland in a quest to survive and thrive. Starting in South Korea in the early 1900s, the story has been told through the eyes of a remarkable matriarch, Sunja, who triumphs against all odds.
The first season, which streamed March 25 through April 29, 2022, received a Peabody Award, an American Film Institute Award, a Critics Choice Award and a Gotham Independent Film Award, as well as netted one Emmy nomination (for Main Title Design) and two Television Critics Association Award nods (for Outstanding New Program and Achievement in Drama).
TVLine readers gave Season 1 a rare average grade of “A+.”
Season 2 brings back Lee Minho (When the Stars Gossip) as Hansu, Minha Kim as Teenage Sunja, Anna Sawai (Shōgun, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) as Naomi, Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari) as Older Sunja, Jin Ha (Devs) as Solomon, Eunchae Jung (Anna) as Young Kyunghee, Soji Arai (Tokyo Vice) as Mozasu and Junwoo Han (The Empire) as Yoseb, while Sungkyu Kim (Kingdom, One Ordinary Day) joined the cast in the new role of Kim Changho.
Soo Hugh created and pens the Pachinko series, and serves as executive producer alongside Michael Ellenberg, Lindsey Springer and Theresa Kang. Leanne Welham, Arvin Chen and Sang-il Lee directed Season 2’s episodes.
