Shoppers at Lidl were confronted by the sight of two men having sex in car park bushes. They were caught mid-act by police who received reports of exposure.

Anthony Rees, 56, and Quentin Jones displayed little regard for bystanders after having sexual intercourse with each other in the car park of Lidl in Cowbridge Road West, in Cardiff, on August 1 last year. Police received reports of the two men exposing themselves and they attended the store in Canton.

A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday heard the police were directed to the bushes. As they pulled up they could see a pair of legs in the air, with white trainers visible, and movement in the bushes. They could hear sexual grunts and moaning.

As they approached the bushes they could see Rees on top of Mr Jones engaging in sexual intercourse. Both men were arrested and taken to custody. The defendant said he couldn't recall what had happened due to taking Valium.

Rees, of North Luton Place, Adamsdown, pleaded guilty to outraging public decency. He has 13 previous convictions relating to violence and drug offences. The defendant, who was unrepresented, missed a court hearing in relation to the offence and was remanded in custody in February. Mr Jones was dealt with at a separate hearing.

Judge Christopher Vosper KC sentenced Rees to 12 weeks imprisonment. Due to the time he has spent in custody he will be released imminently.
