Palestinian Hunger Striker Dies in Israeli Prison

Palestinian prisoner Khader Adnan died following an 86-day hunger strike in Israeli detention, WAFA reported on May 2, citing the Israel Prison Service.

Adnan “was found unresponsive in his cell in Nitzan jail in the central city of Ramle during the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday morning,” the Times of Israel reported. He was transferred to the Shamir Medical Center outside Tel Aviv, where he was declared dead following resuscitation efforts, the report said.

The Arraba native was detained on February 5, his 12th arrest, according to WAFA. He was indicted for “suspected membership in a terror group, support for a terrorist organization and incitement” and was awaiting sentencing, according to the Times of Israel.

A court hearing for Adnan had been scheduled for April 30, the Palestinian Prisoners Society said.

According to the Times of Israel, Adnan “launched his hunger strike immediately after his arrest […] and had refused to undergo medical checks or receive treatment while incarcerated.”
