Paramedics in hospital after Staffordshire ambulance crashes

Two paramedics and a van driver have been taken to hospital after an ambulance was involved in a smash. Police and two ambulances were among the emergency services scrambled to Lichfield's Streetway Road following the collision.

Motorists were urged to avoid the stretch where the crash, which occurred just before 7.20pm last night, had taken place. Now West Midlands Ambulance Service has confirmed the ambulance was 'travelling under normal road conditions' and there was no patient on board at the time.

During the height of yesterday's incident police urged motorists to find alternative routes - while appealing for witnesses to come forward.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said: "West Midlands Ambulance Service can confirm that an ambulance was involved in a collision with a van in Lichfield on Thursday evening. The ambulance was travelling under normal road conditions and did not have a patient on board at the time of the collision which happened on Streetway Road at 7.19pm. Two ambulances, three paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic were sent to the scene. The two ambulance crew members and the driver of the van were assessed and treated for injuries not believed to be serious. All three were conveyed to hospital for further treatment."

Witnesses should call Staffordshire Police on 101 and quote incident 586 of June 6.
