Dare we even mention it: it looks like summer is finally here after what felt like weeks of endless miserable weather. The sun has decided to grace us with its presence and the mercury is gradually rising.

According to the Met Office, the good weather is here to stay. Friday should reach balmy highs of 21C, while Saturday should have sunny intervals with highs of 19C (we won’t complain as that will seem tropical after the chilly conditions of late). Sunday will be another warm one, while lots of sunshine is forecast for the next week. Lovely stuff.

Given this summer’s slow start, we really need to make the most of it and hit up one of Greater Manchester’s amazing parks, gardens and green spaces. There’s one which is only a stone’s throw away from the city centre yet offers gorgeous riverside views, towering trees and vast green lawns.

The place in question is Peel Park, off the Crescent in Salford. Unless you live in the area you’ve probably never heard of it, making it one of Salford’s best kept secrets.

Peel Park sits beside the River Irwell with a wide path running alongside it. It’s the perfect place for a stroll in the sunshine, with Manchester’s skyscrapers visible in the distance.

Approach the park from Salford Museum and Art Gallery and you’ll find several benches where you can take a seat and admire the view of the landscaped garden below, found at the southern end of the park. Take a slow wander down the sloping path, or descend the steps, and explore the gorgeous flower beds and winding paths.

Peel Park has no shortage of lawn where you can roll out a picnic blanket and enjoy a spot of sunbathing or an alfresco meal. With towering trees overhead you can grab a spot in the shade, or choose a more sunnier location.

An ice cream van often makes an appearance on sunny days, and there’s a playground for kids too. The vast lawn in the centre is a popular spot for ball games, while runners can be spotted completing laps around the edge.

Peel Park is a half hour walk from Deansgate tram stop, or just a few minutes from Salford Central Station. There is some pay and display parking at Salford Museum and Art Gallery, and a bus stop right outside.
