Passenger films terrifying moment plane engine starts to break up mid-flight

A passenger onboard a flight from San Francisco to Honolulu has captured the moment when bits of the plane’s engine began falling off.

United Airlines flight #UA1175 was only 35 minutes from landing on the Hawaiian island when parts of the engine began falling off.

In the video, captured by Google UX engineer, the engine is seen shaking from side to side as parts begin to fall from it.

‘That looks bad, plane and simple’, Haddad captioned the video.

Video captured from inside the plane portrays a similarly panicked scene, with passengers crossing their arms on the seat in front of them and bracing for the landing.

‘There was a loud bang … and then the plane really started shaking’, passenger Allison Sudiacal told Hawaii News Now.

‘There was a loud boom and then it was like rattling and the plane was kind of shaking like boom, boom, boom.’

Thankfully, the plane eventually made a safe landing and the Honolulu Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting team rushed immediately to the scene.

In a statement, United Airlines also confirmed that it was only the covering of the engine that fell off.

‘United flight 1175 traveling to Honolulu from San Francisco landed safely after the pilots called for an emergency landing because of a loss of the engine cowling (the covering of the engine)’, the airline confirmed.

‘Our pilots followed all necessary protocols to safely land the aircraft. The aircraft taxied to the gate and passengers deplaned normally.’
