Passenger taken to hospital with serious injuries after car overturned on A1(M) at Chester-le-Street

A passenger suffered serious injuries after a car collided with the A1(M) central reservation and overturned.

The incident happened on the northbound carriageway at J63 A167 near Picktree at around 4.30pm on Saturday. A 40-year-old woman, who was the front seat passenger, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver and another passenger were taken to hospital to be checked over. The road was closed for a number of hours while emergency crews were in attendance.

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: "Police were called shortly before 4.30pm on Saturday (April 13) to a single-vehicle collision on the A1(M) in which a car collided with the central reservation. The front-seat passenger – a 40-year-old woman – was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"The driver and another passenger were also taken to hospital to get checked over.

"The incident happened on the northbound carriageway just before the Chester-le-Street junction and resulted in the road being closed for several hours while emergency crews worked at the scene."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We dispatched two ambulance crews and a clinical team leader, who assessed five patients on scene."
