Pasta salads added to 'do not eat' list of infected wraps and sandwiches

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has updated a list of sandwiches, wraps and other food that could be infected with a food poisoning bug telling people 'do not eat them' - and added pasta salads to the list. Environmental Health and Trading Standards officers have been told to make sure thousands of the food items are pulled from the shelves across the country.

In a new alert, The FSA said produced manufactured and supplied by Bread Spread should be removed from sale and not consumed. There is a risk they are contaminated with Listeria.

Environmental Health and Trading Standards Services have been alerted to remove chilled and ready-to-eat products that include baguettes, french sticks, sandwiches, rolls, wraps and pasta salads manufactured and supplied by Bread Spread Ltd, Southall, under the brand name, Bread Spread, Orbital Foods and Perfect Bite because they have not been manufactured in accordance with food law requirements.

Listeria monocytogenes has been found in some of the products. These products are also subject to a number of hygiene and traceability contraventions which makes them unsafe to eat. All food businesses such as catering establishments and corner shops, across the UK supplied by Bread Spread Ltd should withdraw from sale any chilled and ready-to-eat foods and recall from consumers any of these products sold at retail because they are unsafe to eat. Products should be disposed of safely.

The FSA says that as it is a developing situation, the list of affected products may be incomplete. All chilled and ready-to eat foods with a use-by date up to and including 20 May 2024 manufactured or supplied by Bread Spead Ltd are affected.

This recall has been extended to include pasta salads.

The presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a number of hygiene and traceability contraventions makes these products unsafe to eat. Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea. However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.

If you have purchased any products, or any other products that are chilled or ready-to-eat from Bread Spread Ltd , do not eat them. Instead, dispose of the products safely, at home.

If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product). The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food. In some cases, a 'Food Alert for Action' is issued. This provides local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers.
