Music star Paul Heaton has hailed his favourite chippy in Greater Manchester - as he urged fans to share their own most-loved fish and chip shops.

Happy Hour songster Paul has just released his new solo song Fish 'n' Chip Supper, and it's got him in the mood to share the love for the best chippy teas he's ever had. In a video shared on social media, the former Beautiful South frontman let fans in on his favourites in each of the places he has called home.

Naturally that included one in his now native South Manchester, as well as his favourites growing up in Hull. The former Housemartins star also included his all-time favourite chippy when he's in the capital.

Paul posted his message from inside long-standing Chorlton favourite The Baths Supper Bar. The local eatery was named afte Chorlton Baths, which stood on the other side of Manchester Road for years.

In the video, Paul said: "I want to know what your favourite chip shop is in the whole country. Mine personally is probably Chris's Fish Bar in Turnham Green if I'm down South.

He added: "Then this one, that's Baths Supper Bar in Chorlton, and probably Hull it used to be Latus, but that's gone, and Cave Street Fisheries if it's still open."

He ended the video by calling on fans to "send in your favourites please," to which hundreds have dutifully responded with their own revered chippies.

The Baths Supper Bar owner is Neil Humphreys, who tells the MEN that Paul actually headed down to the chippy to film the video for his new song as well. It has not yet been released, but Neil gave some behind the scenes clues on what happens.

Neil said: "He filmed it about four weeks ago now, they used the shop as the song is called Fish and Chip Supper. I cooked a load of chips for it and an actress was serving them up."

When asked how he felt to be hailed one of Paul's favourite chippies, Neil said: "It's nice to hear that, it's always nice to get a compliment. There's been a chippy here forever so it's well known in the area."

Neil, 54, has run the iconic chippy for the past six years now, and serves up traditional dishes as well as extras like kebabs and fried halloumi. You can get fish and chips for £10 and Neil says: "It's fresh fish every day - you can tell the difference trust me."

As for Paul's new solo song, Neil says: "It's a catchy song, I like it."

Fans replying to Paul's call for the best chippies across Britain included a host of votes for other favourites across Greater Manchester.

Dave Barlow shared an epic shot of his fish, chips, peas and curry from Crispy Cod in Burnage, Levenshulme's Trawlers 2 was praised, while Bolton's famous Olympus chippy got plenty of shout outs.
