A noisy peacock that has evaded capture while roaming the streets for six months has finally been rescued.

The exotic bird, named Saataj by locals, has been living in Gravesend, Kent, crossing a busy road to sleep in a tree.

But because peacocks are coming into breeding season, the male bird has been calling out for a mate, leaving locals concerned.

Volunteers from Dartford Animal Rescue have now rescued the animal.

Ciara O’Hare, 25, who runs the rescue service told Kent Online: “The peacock had been roaming around the area for six months to a year and had been crossing a main road to sleep in a tree at night.

“He’d been chilling between three gardens and the neighbours had all become quite attached, they fed him and gave him the name Saataj.

“Now that it’s coming into breeding season he started to scream and make a really loud call because he was looking for a mate, so the neighbours became quite concerned.”

Saataj was later taken to The Retreat Animal Rescue Farm Sanctuary in Ashford, Kent, where it has been introduced to other peacocks and peahens.
