A cave complex in the Peak District, boasting millions of years of history etched into its depths, has been recognised as one of the world's top days out. Poole's Cavern and Buxton Country Park have earned a spot in Tripadvisor's Traveller's Choice Awards for 2024, placing them in the top 10% of global listings on the travel advice platform.

Visitors can delve into the expansive limestone caverns and marvel at the crystal stalactites that have adorned the chambers for millennia. A spokesperson for the cavern revealed that it has been drawing adventurers since the 1500s, including notable figures such as Mary Stuart, better known as Mary Queen of Scots, who reportedly visited in 1582.

In 1681, author Charles Cotton included the cave in his list of seven 'Wonders of the Peak', catapulting the cavern into the limelight. The Tripadvisor award is based on genuine feedback from community members who have visited and left an authentic, first-hand review in the past year.

During a typical visit to the cavern, which operates from 9.15am to 5pm daily, explorers are treated to a guided 45-minute tour through the subterranean passages, which can be rounded off with a stop at the on-site shop and cafe, reports Derbyshire Live.

Dave Green, CEO of Buxton Civic Association, expressed his gratitude: "Thank you to all our visitors and reviewers for their unwavering support and kind words. We are honoured to be included among travellers' favourites this year."

He further highlighted the team's efforts: "This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our staff, who continuously strive to provide an exceptional experience for everyone who visits Poole's Cavern and Buxton Country Park."

Green also pointed out the environmental impact of the visits: "Visits to Poole's Cavern contribute to the essential environmental and heritage conservation work that Buxton Civic Association undertake in Buxton, including managing 160 acres of woodland. We are thrilled to be recognised by Tripadvisor and will continue our commitment to preserving and showcasing this beautiful destination for all to enjoy."

The attraction has received high praise on Tripadvisor, with one visitor commenting: "If you love a cave walk, this is brilliant! Love a cave walk and this didn't disappoint. Our tour guide and she was very helpful and informative. The tour lasts about an hour. In the caves, there was a very safe walkway that was secured by a handrail."

Another shared their positive experience: "Really enjoyed our visit to the cavern - our guide was very knowledgeable (though it was a little hard to hear him at some points due to the force of the river! ) and the cavern is beautiful. Park was nice too, though due to the rain, we didn't spend much time exploring it! ".
