A peek inside the 'World's Most Beautiful Milk Shop'

Sitting in the heart of Dresden, Pfunds Molkerei has been hailed as the world's most beautiful milk shop.

The shop has continued to captivate visitors since its opening in 1892 by the enterprising Pfund brothers.

However, it's now that the historic shop has become a top attraction in Dresden as its stunning interior is now as much of a draw as its fresh dairy products.

The shop's interior, adorned with 247.9 m² of hand-painted tiles from Villeroy & Boch, tells the captivating story of the Pfund brothers.

This unique decor has earned Pfunds Molkerei a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the "World's Most Beautiful Milk Shop". In addition to its stunning decor, at Pfunds Molkerei, guests can savour fresh milk, buttermilk, and cheese platters, alongside other delicious offering, Stepping into Pfunds Molkerei feels like stepping back in time.

Having been restored, it is largely unchanged since its early years, and the walls and ceilings are a visual feast, featuring intricate depictions of angels, cherubic babies, cows, and woodland creatures, all highlighted with gold and blue accents.

Despite its beauty today, the shop has often come close to disaster - having survived two world wars and expropriation under the communist East German government. It survived the infamous firebombing of Dresden in World War Two - when large parts of the city were destroyed, including several famous landmarks. In 1990, the heirs to the Pfunds regained their old ownership rights.

After years of neglect during the communist era, a renovation was necessary. Even though only just under 5 percent of the tiles had to be renewed, it was still a costly undertaking, with missing tiles newly manufactured by Villeroy & Boch in its factory in Mettlach.

Locals and tourists alike now flock to Pfunds Molkerei not just for its dairy products but for the unique atmosphere.
