Penny Mordaunt loses her seat to Labour in close race

Penny Mordaunt has lost her seat at the general election.

The Leader of the House was beaten by Labour in the Portsmouth North constituency. Ms Mordaunt, who has been in parliament since 2010, received 13,715 votes but her opponent Amanda Martin was elected with 14,495.

The close-run race saw another cabinet member lose their seat. Ms Mordaunt follows Gillian Keegan, Alex Chalk and Grant Shapps on a bruising night for the Conservatives.

Released as voting closed at 10pm on Thursday (July 4), the exit poll predicted a landslide Labour victory. Sir Keir Starmer's party is forecast to win 410 seats to the Conservatives' 131, bringing an end to 14 years of Tory rule and returning Labour to Downing Street

If the exit poll is correct, the Conservatives will have their lowest number of MPs on record. The Liberal Democrats are forecast to win 61 seats, Reform UK 13 and the Green Party two.
