A pensioner has been charged with murdering his elderly wife, aged 77, after walking into a police station and admitting he assaulted her in east London.

Maya Devi was found by paramedics and police suffering head injuries at the couple’s home on Cowdray Way at Elm Park Hornchurch, on Tuesday night. She died at the scene.

Tarsame Singh, 79, has been charged with her murder, Metropolitan Police said on Thursday.

He will appear at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court.

Mrs Devi’s next of kin are aware and are being supported by specially trained officers, the Met said.

Mr Singh told officers around 9.30pm on Tuesday that he had assaulted his spouse at their home in Elm Park.

The couple’s family are “desperately trying to understand what has happened”, police earlier told the Standard.

Detective Superintendent Richard Vandenbergh of East Area Basic Command Unit, said the “awful crime” was “upsetting” for the local community.
