A pensioner who collapsed on the London Underground has described how selfish commuters ignored him as they trampled over him to catch their trains.

Widower Maurice Grange, who lost his wife Esme in October, was left covered in bruises when he fainted on the escalator at Waterloo Station on December 23.

The 81-year-old was dragged to the bottom of the lift and left barely conscious as people walked over him as he lay on the floor.

Describing the ordeal, Mr Green said: “I just collapsed. It was very busy and the escalator was going quite quickly and the next thing I knew I was on the floor and people were walking all over me.

"It just scooped me up and dragged me down onto the platform.

"I’m still bruised from the fall - there was shoes and boots coming right onto me.”

The distressed former civil servant was finally given help by a young family, who helped him up of the ground and showed him to his train.

Mr Green, who was travelling from his home in Dorset to Yorkshire to spend Christmas with his daughter, now wants to find the family who helped him so that he can thank them.

He added: "It was a young man and woman with a four-year-old boy and a toddler girl and a push chair I think.

"They helped me to my feet and held me for a while, as I couldn’t really stand up.

"Then they took me to my train and made sure I got on it.

"I didn’t really think to ask them for any details, but I remember they told me they’re from Birmingham.

"I just wish I’d got some contact details for them, I really just want to say thank you.”

Mr Green lost his wife after she lost a six year fight with dementia.

He said: “I had been thinking about Esme a lot, because it’s been really quite hard these last few years and especially since I lost her.

"We’d been married for 51 years.

"I’ve never had anything like this before, no funny turns, but I was thinking about her just before I fell and I think that might have been it.”
