Viewers have been left furious after the BBC captioned Cristiano Ronaldo's missed penalty at Euro 2024 as 'Misstiano Penaldo'.

Portugal eventually defeated Slovenia on penalties in the round of 16 on July 1, with Ronaldo missing a crucial earlier in-game penalty in extra time that would have likely won Roberto Martinez's side the game.

The legendary forward cried after goalkeeper Jan Oblak saved the effort, with team-mates comforting him despite there being more than 15 minutes to play of extra time. Ronaldo would go on to score the subsequent penalty in the actual penalty shoot-out, with his goalkeeper Diogo Costa saving three Slovenia penalties.

Perhaps even more viral than his miss last night was the 'Misstiano Penaldo' graphic from the BBC, which Chelsea icon John Terry branded as a "disgrace" on social media.

Scotland rugby legend Stuart Hogg wrote on X: "I fricking hate seeing this. No concern towards the PERSON, whatsoever. And, in a major tournament, everyone jumping on the bandwagon."

An X user wrote: "People preach about men’s mental health then laugh at Cristiano Ronaldo for showing emotion in a big moment under immense pressure, then the BBC mock him as Misstiano Penaldo. He deserves huge credit for stepping forward during the shootout and scoring (but owes Costa big time)."

Many footballs fans however, were able to see the funny side of it.

"Misstiano Penaldo is sensational hating from BBC" said one.

"That's genius!" said another.
