Nearly two years after The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story became a pop culture phenom, its first spin-off is finally coming to telly.

US channel FX has just shared the big news that serial killer docu-drama The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story will premiere on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 10pm ET.

The latest true crime anthology from producer Ryan Murphy dramatises the real-life 1997 manhunt for serial killer Andrew Cunanan after his murder of Gianni Versace on the fashion designer's Miami doorstep.

In this dramatisation, Glee's Darren Criss takes on his darkest role ever as Cunanan while Versace will be portrayed by Bright actor Édgar Ramírez. Academy Award winner Penélope Cruz will star as Donatella Versace, Gianni's sister and subsequent heiress to the family's fashion empire.

The Assassination of Gianni Versace was one of several spin-offs in the aftermath of The People v OJ Simpson's huge success. Seasons based on Hurricane Katrina and the Monica Lewinsky-Bill Clinton sex scandal sex scandal were also tipped.

The Katrina story was originally supposed to air second after The People v OJ Simpson, but was pushed back in order for it to be re-conceived around Sarah Paulson.

Now, it will be told through the eyes of a real-life New Orleans emergency room doctor Anna Pou, who faced criminal charges (which were later dismissed) over the treatment of hurricane victims in her care.

There's no air date yet for The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story on BBC Two in the UK.
