Pep Guardiola reacts to Rodri award snub despite incredible Man City record

Pep Guardiola told Rodri to shrug off his Premier League snub as Manchester City aim to make history.

Rodri has again shown himself to be arguably the most important player in Guardiola's team, with their only three league defeats this season coming while he was absent. The midfielder is on a British record of 71 games in all competitions without being on the losing side – the penalty shootout against Real doesn't count to official statistics – in a run stretching back to February 2023.

However, his name was missed off the list of eight players shortlisted for the Premier League Player of the Season award. City teammates Phil Foden and Erling Haaland were among the nominees, as was Arsenal's Declan Rice – who recently named Rodri as the best in the world in his position.

Guardiola may not agree with the list but does not place much merit in the rankings and has urged Rodri to follow suit.

The Spaniard knows how highly he is rated at the Etihad and the Blues will be looking to him again in the final weeks to continue his levels and push them to an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title.

"He has been one of the best. Those nominated deserve it and others deserve it too," said Guardiola. "The list is huge.

"What is important is he knows what we think about his importance and what a magnificent, extraordinary player he is. He should not be worried at all about that."
