Percy Jackson Premiere Draws 13.3 Million Views, a Streaming Record for Disney Branded Television

Talk about lightning in a bottle.

The highly anticipated arrival of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV series emerged as the No. 1 Disney Branded Television premiere of all time — and one of the Top 5 season premieres of 2023 — with its first episode delivering 13.3 million views globally across both Disney+ and Hulu in its first six days. (A “view” here is rightly defined as “total stream time divided by run time.”)

TVLine readers gave the series premiere an average grade of “B.”

Other Disney Branded Television premieres in 2023 included Goosebumps, the second season of The Santa Clauses, KIFF (the best animated series launch for Kids 6-11 since Big City Greens in 2018), Superkitties (the most-watched new series among pre-schoolers), and new episodes of Bluey (the most-watched series of the year for kids 2-11).

Though not at all “apples to apples” given the varying measurement windows and single vs. multiple streamers involved, I’ll simply note that, for example, the Star Wars-branded Ahsoka premiere generated 14 million global views in its first six days on Disney+, and Marvel-branded Loki‘s Season 2 premiere amassed 10.9 million global views after just three days streaming on Disney+.

Based on Disney Hyperion’s best-selling book series by award-winning author Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Olympians finds the titular teen (played by Walker Scobell) on a dangerous quest — outrunning monsters and outwitting gods as he journeys across America to return Zeus’ master bolt and stop an all-out war. With the help of his quest mates Annabeth and Grover (Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri), Percy’s journey will lead him closer to the answers he seeks: how to fit into a world where he feels out of place and find out who he’s destined to be.

Percy Jackson premiered last Tuesday with two episodes, and a “surprise!” day early. Subsequent episodes of the eight-part season debut weekly on Tuesdays at 9 pm ET, with Episode 3 dropping tonight.
