A man is fighting for his life following a 'violent incident' at a Middlesbrough pub.

Cleveland Police have confirmed that one man is in a critical condition in hospital and another man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The Jack and Jill pub, on Crossfell Road, Middlesbrough, was cordoned off on Saturday evening following a large emergency response to the premises and ambulance crews took one person to James Cook Hospital.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said on Sunday: "A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an incident at the Jack and Jill pub in Crossfell Road, Middlesbrough. Officers were called to the scene shortly before 6pm on Saturday, 11 May, following reports of an assault.

"The man remains in police custody at this time. A man is in hospital in a critical condition. Enquiries are continuing and officers would like to reassure the local community that there is not believed to be any risk to the wider public."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to an incident at the Jack and Jill pub, on Crossfell Road, Middlesbrough, just after 5.40pm last night (Saturday 11 May). We dispatched two double crewed ambulances, a specialist paramedic, a duty officer and the medicar - which includes a paramedic and an officer from Cleveland Police. One patient was taken to James Cook Hospital."

Following what was initially described by police as "reports of a violent incident" a large cordon was placed around the pub and the footpath and was there for a number of hours. Any witnesses or anyone with information is urged to contact Cleveland Police on 101, quoting reference number CVP-24-087342.
