Peter Andre has recalled his hysterical Welsh fans including one woman who loved him so much she had his name repeatedly scrawled across her face. He said he is always humbled by his strong following in Wales and that he still receives similar adulation when he visits the country.

Days after the birth of his daughter Arabella, Andre was speaking to WalesOnline at the Cardiff Foodies Festival in the capital’s Bute Park on its third and final day on Sunday afternoon minutes after he’d performed his own cooking tutorial alongside Cardiff-born MasterChef finalist Larkin Cen.

At the end of the demonstration, in which Andre cooked a tomato-based penne, chicken and mozzarella dish, fans rushed to the front of the large tent where affable Andre greeted every fan that approached him and even kissed some of them on the hands.

“I love it,” he said afterwards, recalling the fan with his name written all over her face. “It’s so amazing because I remember when I did my first ever gig in Cardiff, which was in the international arena back in the 1990s, it was huge. I’ll never forget it. I remember I got so much more love than I could ever have expected and still to this day when we do things you just don’t expect people to react in the way they do. Sometimes we go to places even now and it’s still like that. It’s really really nice.”

Such is Andre’s love for the Welsh he asked his wife Emily MacDonagh what she thought of the name Seren for their new baby, but he was pleased with her choice - although he said it didn’t feel right calling his daughter by her name yet. “I gave her the choice and she chose a beauty,” he said. “I’d have been happy with anything she’d have chosen, but I can’t actually call her that [Arabella] yet. I can’t call her anything yet. If it was left to me she’d still have no name. You have all of these ideas of names and then when you see the baby they’re none of what you see.”

At 6.30pm the Mysterious Girl singer took to the stage in the park to perform for more than an hour for the hundreds of revellers on a warm evening. Minutes before he explained why he felt humbled at the varied audience at the festival.

“When you look at my audiences now, because they’ve grown with me, they are older,” he said. “But the ages are all different and can be three to 93. That was always the dream, to be able to cater to a whole group of people. All of the artists I grew up with appealed to everyone. I’m not saying my music does, but it’s lovely to have that following.”

Andre is touring some of the Foodies Festivals in the UK off the back of his stint on ITV’s Cooking With The Stars last year, when he reached the final. “I love cooking,” he added. “With my parents being from Greece growing up everything was based around food, so I learned a lot from them. To come here and be a part of it and see the reaction we get is unbelievable. My favourite thing about Wales above anything else is actually Welsh lamb. It’s on a par with New Zealand lamb for me. So, so good.”
