Peter Kay brought more than good tidings to one lucky couple after helping them get engaged live on stage.

During the Birmingham gig of his highly-anticipated comeback tour, Kay dressed up as Santa for the festive season to bring a little festive cheer.

He then surprised the audience by bringing Steve Drury, 53, onto the stage, and giving him the opportunity to propose to girlfriend Stephanie Mann, 55.

Drury, from Norwich, had secretly reached out to the comedian before the show by handing a note to an usher in the hopes it would be reach Kay in time.

Thankfully it did, and Mann happily said yes after dreaming of a "big" proposal.

Kay kept the surprise going until the last minute by bringing the couple on stage under guise of doing karaoke in a "random pick from the crowd".

In a video obtained by Birmingham Live, Kay then stood behind the couple as Drury got down on one knee, and said to the cheering audience: "Fantastic! Aww, does it [the ring] fit? Beautiful!"

As he hugged the couple, Kay continued: "Congratulations. Happy Christmas. Aww, aww… look at this, all the love….congratulations."

"Big cheer for Stephanie and Steve everybody! Lovely, nice to meet you. Happy Christmas, how lovely," Kay concluded. "Awww… that were nice, weren't it? Fantastic."

In a later chat with Mail Online, delivery driver Drury said: "[Stephanie] was so shocked she didn't say 'yes' straight away - Peter had to prompt her.

"That was a bit scary but the whole thing was fantastic. So many people congratulated us and offered selfies."

The Phoenix Nights and Car Share star has been largely out of the spotlight since December 2017, when he cancelled a planned tour due to “unforeseen family circumstances”.

After that, he only made few appearances in order to fundraise for charity.

His return was announced during an ad break for 2022's I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, with the funny man releasing a low-budget promo which saw him 'carrying a carpet into his mum's house' while a pal filmed him on a phone.

Appearing on Radio 2's Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on 9 November, Kay also confirmed a monthly residency at The O2 in London. It will start on 16 December and run until 18 November 2023.

His comeback comedy tour was so in demand that it caused tickets sites to crash, and he's since announced additional dates in order to keep up with demand.
