Peterlee shoplifter captured knocking two elderly women to ground before assaulting female officers


A man who knocked two elderly women to the ground after shoplifting has been locked up.

Stephen Jack Thomas Wray grabbed a leg of lamb from one of the freezers at Iceland in Peterlee, County Durham, before running from the shop with the stolen item.

As the 23-year-old legged it from the store on April 4, he collided with two women in their 70s. They were both knocked to the ground and had to attend hospital for their injuries.

Police later found Wray heavily intoxicated and arrested him on suspicion of theft and assault. During the arrest, Wray became increasingly agitated and assaulted two female officers.

When asked during interview whether he felt any remorse for the incidents, Wray replied 'no comment'.

Wray, of no fixed abode, was charged with two counts of assault, two counts of assaulting a police officer, and theft. He was convicted at Durham Crown Court on May 10 and jailed for three years and eight months.
