New petrol and diesel rule from July will see drivers pay £50 extra 'per year'

Petrol and diesel drivers are fearful Sir Keir Starmer could hike fuel duty and "make drivers pay" under new rules from July. Starmer and the Labour Party have been backed to win the forthcoming General Election, which will take place on July 4.

FairFuelUK founder and Reform UK candidate Howard Cox told the Express: “Although the last 14 years of Tory governance have been less than successful across several political issues, at least in that time, I convinced them to keep fuel duty frozen.

“So, if you drive a petrol, specifically a diesel vehicle, Labour will make you pay—and pay big time. Their blinkered vision of what constitutes saving the planet through prejudiced strategies of more road restrictions, needless emissions control, increased running costs, and higher taxation will become firmly entrenched.

“Drivers and businesses must unite through media support to stop the new Government’s foreboding insanity. And only Reform UK truly supports the motorist.” A new FairFuel poll shows 3.70 per cent of over 38,000 respondents said they expect rates to increase.

19 per cent said they believe Labour will continue to keep prices frozen. Car drivers to save around £50 this year and £250 since the 5p cut was introduced – a £13 billion tax cut for motorists. Chancellor for the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt said: "Cutting people’s tax bill, while protecting our public services, is a priority. We’re already saving drivers £50 a year and the average earner £900 a year – and if we stick to our plan, we will go even further, rewarding work and growing our economy."

Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho said: "We will always stand by UK drivers and today’s fuel duty cut is just one of the ways we are keeping costs down for families. Our plans for a new Pumpwatch will make sure motorists are getting a fair price at the pump."
