New pictures show improvements to fenced-off part of town centre

A busy part of Swindon town centre has been fenced off in recent weeks as part of a major improvement project.

The area outside Debenhams was made out of bounds to the public in March, with Swindon Borough Council confirming construction work would begin there to make the area "nicer for residents and visitors".

The local authority confirmed the work is part of the Fleming Way regeneration scheme, which will see the area transformed into a 'main gateway for Swindon town centre'.

New photos show that significant progress has been made with new paving being laid.

A council spokesperson said: "When complete, new paving and landscaping will be installed, including planters that will be home to new plants and trees. It will make the area more vibrant and a nicer place for residents and visitors to the town centre to enjoy and spend time in."

All of the shops in the area have remained open and accessible throughout the works and access to the pedestrian route to the bus station will be maintained at all times.

The larger Fleming Way improvement scheme is due to finish by the summer of 2025, after experiencing delays.
