Commuters heading to work after Christmas are facing chaos as Storm Eleanor batters Britain with hurricane-force winds of up to 100mph after sweeping across the Atlantic.

Torrential rain across the UK has triggered ‘danger to life’ cautions, and flood warnings have been put in place in both England and Wales.

Coastal towns are also making desperate attempts to stop sea water flooding, with families stacking sandbags against their front doors in Cornwall as waves up to 30ft high batter coastal defences.

The storm has also caused havoc on Britain’s roads – all traffic was halted on junctions 17 and 18 of the M25 after a large tree fell onto the carriageway clockwise.

Ireland has also been severely affected by the storm, with at least 55,000 properties experiencing blackouts as the winter storm battered the electricity network.
