Pier and Wharf Damaged as Storm Batters California's Central Coast

A wharf and a pier in Santa Cruz County were damaged after a storm brought flooding and dangerous surf conditions to parts of California’s Central Coast on Thursday, January 5.

Footage by Kelly Pound shows a partially collapsed wharf in Capitola, while another video shows damage to a section of the pier to the cement ship at Seacliff State Beach in Aptos.

Santa Cruz County officials said the storm has caused “significant damage” throughout the county and along the coast, including heavy damage to piers in Capitola and Seacliff, and advised residents to avoid the coast due to dangerous surf.

The National Weather Service reported widespread rain showers, which led to additional localized flooding along the Central Coast on Thursday, prompting a flood advisory for the area. Credit: Kelly Pound via Storyful
