Piers Morgan is celebrating after Jameela Jamil said she is quitting Twitter following its takeover by Elon Musk.

The social media platform has announced it is being bought by the billionaire Tesla CEO for $44 billion (£34b) - prompting the 36-year-old star of The Good Place to announce she was posting her final tweet.

Morgan, 57, responded with a series of applauding emojis, writing: "Thank you @elonmusk !!!!!!!!"

British actor, TV presenter and activist Jamil had declared: "One good thing about Elon buying twitter is that I will *FINALLY* leave and stop being a complete menace to society on here. So it’s win win for you all really."

She then shared a series of images of her pet dog Barold captioned: "Ah he got Twitter. I would like this to be my what lies here as my last tweet. Just really *any* excuse to show pics of Barold. I fear this free speech bid is going to help this hell platform reach its final form of totally lawless hate, bigotry, and misogyny. Best of luck."

Jamil - who publicly supports LGBTQ and women's rights, along with body positivity and diversity - has been extremely vocal on the social media platform for some time, often publicly responding to trolls, as well as clashing with other celebrity Twitter users.

She and former Good Morning Britain presenter Morgan have exchanged tweets over issues on which they disagreed several times in the past.

In August 2019 new TalkTV presenter Morgan called Jamil a "virtue-signalling twerp" and a "vile, racist bully", for expressing her views about the treatment of Meghan Markle by the British media.

Jamil had tweeted: “Ugh. Dear England and English press, just say you hate her because she’s black, and him for marrying a black woman and be done with it God dammit.

“Your bullying is so embarrassing and obvious. You’ve all lost your marbles. It’s 2019. Grow up.”

Morgan replied: "Vile racist bully accuses all 55 million people in England of being vile racist bullies. I suggest YOU grow up, Ms Jamil, you pathetic virtue-signalling twerp."

In another altercation on Twitter Jamil called Morgan a, "problematic slut-shaming, fat-shaming, misogynist, irrelevant s**t stain."

She was responding to his criticism of Meghan Markle for including Jamil in her list of 15 “world-changing women” when she guest-edited British Vogue.

And when Morgan left ITV's GMB in March Jamil revealed she had been made to feel suicidal by his treatment of her.

Following the death of Love Island presenter Caroline Flack, Morgan shared private messages he had received from her about a public spat she had had with Jamil.

Flack was apparently unhappy with the way Jamil was criticising proposed new show The Surjury which would feature contestants convincing a jury that plastic surgery would improve their lives.

Jamil said: "I almost killed myself a year ago because of Piers Morgan’s relentless campaign of lies and hatred against me last February. I’m glad I’m still alive today for many reasons. But watching him leave GMB today is right up there."
