Piers Morgan: Rita Ora's only sorry she got caught having illegal birthday party in lockdown

Piers Morgan has ridiculed Rita Ora’s apology for breaking lockdown rules, saying she is only sorry she got caught.

The How We Do (Party) singer has said she is “deeply sorry” for breaching rules put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 so she could celebrate her 30th birthday with friends.

Morgan dismissed her apology on Good Morning Britain, saying: "'I'm deeply sorry', what about? You're not deeply sorry – you're deeply sorry you got caught!

"That's what you're 'deeply sorry' about. If you hadn't been caught, would you be issuing a statement saying 'I've just woken up and realised what I did was terribly wrong and I'm deeply sorry'?

"She's a very rich pop star and she deliberately planned a 30th birthday party – I don't know what the restaurant was thinking, so how are you able to do that? And why were you doing that?"

The How To Be Lonely singer partied at west London restaurant Casa Cruz on Saturday night with friends including Cara and Poppy Delevingne, Vas Morgan and Ora’s sister Elena.

Morgan also mocked Ora for having previously launched her own coronavirus Stop The Spread merchandise.

He fumed: "Here's what I think about Rita Ora, perfectly nice person, I've met her a couple of times.

"Her mother is a health worker, she spent most of the first wave of the pandemic doing interviews talking about her pride in the health service, because her mum is one of them.

"And then she launched a range of clothing, coronavirus clothing, 'stop the spread'.

"This is the same Rita Ora, and then she invites 30 of her mates for a lockdown-breaking 30th birthday party.

"How does that stop the spread, Rita? What does your mum think of this, after all you said about the NHS?

"You put those pictures out of yourself, you didn't put up the pictures of your friends leaving out the back."

Morgan added: "It's exhausting, these people, they are so selfish."

The singer’s birthday party was revealed just one day after Laurence Fox bragged on Twitter that he had hosted a large lunch party and hugged his guests.

England is currently in a national lockdown that stipulates that people must not meet with anyone from outside their household bubble, either indoors or outdoors. Bars and restaurants are closed and only those offering takeaway services are permitted to operate.

When the lockdown is lifted on Wednesday, the country will move to a tiered system of restrictions in which groups meeting indoors are limited to the rule of six, even in lower-risk Tier 1 areas.
