Pirates Of The Caribbean star Tamayo Perry has tragically died following a shark attack in Hawaii.

The actor, who is also known for his roles in The Bridge, Blue Crush and Hawaii Five-0, was surfing at Malaekahana Beach on the Hawaiian island of Oahu when the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 1pm after reports of a person being "fatally injured by a shark". They used a jet ski to recover Perry's body from the ocean.

Honolulu Ocean Safety acting chief Kurt Lager paid tribute to Perry at a press conference, describing him as a lifeguard and professional surfer who was "loved by all" and well-known globally and in Oahu's North Shore.

"Tamayo's personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more," Lager said. He extended condolences to Perry's family.

In the fourth instalment of the Pirates Of The Caribbean series, On Stranger Tides, which also starred Penelope Cruz and Johnny Depp, Perry played one of the buccaneers. He had also appeared in Lost, filmed in Oahu, and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.

Mayor Rick Blangiardi described Perry's death as "a tragic loss", adding: "Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected, (he) grew up right over here, and just a great member of our ocean safety team." He continued: "So you get a call like this on a Sunday afternoon, it's just really hard to imagine."

Mayor Blangiardi also urged the public and media to "honour and respect" Perry's family as they come to terms with their loss.
