A well-known surfer - who also appeared in a role in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise - has tragically died following a suspected shark attack.

It was on Sunday that Honolulu Emergency Medical Services made the tragic announcement that Tamayo Perry had been discovered unresponsive with numerous shark-inflicted injuries. The 49 year old surfing enthusiast was off the coast of Goat Island, also recognised as Mokuauia, close to Laie, Hawaii, when officials located him just around 1pm local time, according to information given to the Star-Advertiser.

Following the tragic discovery, lifeguards brought his body back to shore using a jetski, confirming his identity after informing his relatives. There is speculation from emergency personnel that Tamayo might have sustained multiple shark bites, indicating that this could be the second lethal incident in Oahu for the month, reports the Express.

"Tamayo Perry was a lifeguard loved by all, well-known on the North Shore, a professional surfer known worldwide around the world," said Acting Ocean Safety Chief Kurt Lager in an emotional tribute. "Tamayo's personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more.

"Our condolences go out to Tamayo's family and to the entire lifeguard ohana. We're asking for some privacy for his family at this time."

Expressing his sorrow, Mayor Rick Blangiardi spoke of Tamayo's passing as a "tragic loss". "Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected [...] a great member of our Ocean Safety team; it's just really hard to imagine, so we just want to pay our respects to our guys," Mayor Blangiardi said.

"I hope everyone wishes the family the best honours and respects the situation." Jason Bitzer, a close friend of Tamayo, shared a heartfelt homage on Facebook: "The things we have seen! My brother in Christ I love you brah! Tamayo, I won't get over this until I see you in heaven. Tamayo Perry you weren't my friend you were my brother, the pain we're collectively feeling is immense."
