Half of the money awarded to a council for regeneration projects has now been spent. In 2021 Newcastle Borough Council was awarded more than £40 million in town deal funding for both Kidsgrove and Newcastle town centres and a further £11 million in future high street funding.

Now four years later half the money has been spent and the council has received confirmation that the deadline for spending the money has been extended until March 2027.

Recently planning permission has been granted for large screens at the market and ‘nipper parking’ has been agreed. The partial demolition of Astley Place has been completed and it is expected that the planning committee will rule on future development in the Spring.

The new Castle Car Park opened yesterday. There are also a number of planning applications that are out for consultation including the McCarthy and Stone residential development at Ryecroft; the redevelopment of the Ryecroft site by Capital and Centric, and plans for the former Midway car park for 114 flats.

But £3.8 million plans to redevelop Kidsgrove Train Station risk being derailed by a mining survey.

Deputy council leader Stephen Sweeney said: “Thanks to the fast pace at which this council has been moving on regeneration using the funding from the previous government via future high street fund and town deals the projects are advancing and will continue to do so. We will continue injecting pace into our borough regeneration with finding spent and projects delivered by the required deadline.”
