Plans for a new industrial unit at Follingsby Business Park are set to be heard by Gateshead Councillors next week.

The local authority’s planning and development committee will decide on a follow-up application for the construction of a new industrial site, comprising a warehouse and office space totalling 7,432m2 of floor space. The council had already approved an outline application in 2019 but now specifics, including the scale and layout of the prospective addition to Follingsby Park are back before the committee.

According to council documents, the application, put forward by Legal and General Property Fund UK, “would provide for increased job opportunity and economic growth within a key employment area”.

The potential new addition could soon be neighbours with IKEA, B&Q, Royal Mail, Northumbria Police, and Northern Powergrid, among others.

According to the design statement, the plans have been developed to “meet the requirements of the regional and local market”. In addition, Legal and General stated: “The developments aim to maximise the use of the site most efficiently whilst being considerate to the existing neighbours and the wider local environment.”

Council documents from the original application stated: “It is considered that the development would bring about a number of benefits such as the provision of additional employment opportunities in Gateshead and the use of currently vacant land for an appropriate use. Taking all other matters into account, it is considered that the proposed development is acceptable (subject to satisfactory resolution of ecology matters), the proposal (subject to planning conditions) is considered to accord with the aims and objectives of both national and local planning policies.”

Councillors will gather to discuss and decide on the plans at Gateshead Civic Centre at 10 am, June 12
