PlayStation Plus Essential free games for May 2023 announced
PlayStation has announced April's free games for the Essential tier, which you'll be able to claim for a month from Tuesday, May 2.
To remind you, Essential is the base tier that lets you play games online. Every month there are also three to five games you can claim within that time period, which you can then access as long as your account has an active subscription.
GRID Legends (PS5/PS4) leads the pack, as it were, this month. A motorsport racing game that sets itself apart from the competition with a focus on its story mode, with the drama presented through a documentary that features none other than Sex Education and Doctor Who's Ncuti Gatwa among its cast.

Descenders (PS4) is another racing title, although this one is centred around downhill biking. Between its in-depth physics system and procedurally generated levels, this one is a lot more technical for the hardcore.
Finally, there's medieval first-person slasher Chivalry 2 (PS5/PS4), inspired by the kind of battles you see in the movies set in ye olden times. There's a host of classes, sub-classes and weapons to try out in either objective-based or free-for-all battles featuring up to a whopping 64 players.
With its arcadey nature, and fluid 4K/60fps action on PS5, we can see this one being quite popular once it becomes available for Plus players to dive into.

These three games replace April's Essential selection of Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Meet Your Maker and Tails of Iron, so if you haven't claimed these titles yet, do so quickly.
It's also worth noting that the higher tiers of Plus, Extra and Premium, will be losing a whopping 50 games in May.
