Plymouth Argyle complete Darko Gyabi loan re-signing from Leeds United

Head coach Wayne Rooney has spoken of his delight that Darko Gyabi is returning to Plymouth Argyle for a second time on loan from Leeds United.

Rooney, who was appointed by the Pilgrims earlier this summer, declared that Gyabi 'fits the profile of midfielder I like to have within the squad.'

The 20-year-old first arrived at Home Park on loan from Leeds in January, shortly after Ian Foster had been appointed as Argyle's head coach, and went straight into the Pilgrims' starting line-up when he made his debut in a 1-1 draw away to Huddersfield Town.

Gyabi went on to make nine Championship starts and one substitute appearance before his loan was prematurely ended by a groin injury and he returned to Leeds ahead of having surgery.

Rooney said: "I heard really good reports about Darko from his time with Argyle last season and since watching him closely I was really keen to bring him back to the club.

"He fits the profile of midfielder I like to have within the squad, as he is good on the ball, powerful and athletic, and will fit the style of play I am looking to implement. It is a really exciting time with the squad due back for pre-season this week - I am delighted that Darko will be a part of that."

Gyabi is Argyle's second summer signing, following left wing-back Nathanael Ogbeta from Championship rivals Swansea City, and it comes with pre-season training starting tomorrow.

Argyle director of football Neil Dewsnip said: “We are thrilled that Darko has agreed to join us again for the season. We saw real glimpses of his ability during his short spell at the club and were all disappointed when his season finished early due to injury.

“He loved his time here and was really keen to come back. He will complement Wayne’s midfield options perfectly. He is young and has a real hunger to prove himself at this level and beyond. He will join up with the squad in time for pre-season and we look forward to having him back with us.”

Gyabi played most of his games for Argyle last season in midfield, but arguably his best performance came as a an attacking 'number 10' in the 2-0 win away to Middlesbrough in February.
