Plymouth Argyle make Ibrahim Cissoko their fourth summer signing

Wayne Rooney has predicted Plymouth Argyle's latest summer signing, Dutch under-21 winger Ibrahim Cissoko, will be exciting to watch for the Green Army.

Cissoko has completed a move to the Pilgrims on a season-long loan from Ligue Un club Toulouse in France and Rooney described him as 'quick, athletic and technical'. The 21-year-old has joined up with the rest of the Argyle squad at their training camp in Marbella on Spain's Costa del Sol, where they will be spending the rest of this week.

Born in the Dutch city of Nijmegen, Cissoko came through the youth ranks at his hometown club NEC and made his first team debut in April 2022. The 6ft 2in attacking player went on to make a total of nine starts and 21 substitute appearances for NEC in the Eredivisie, and scored three goals, before he was signed by Toulouse last summer for a reported €3 million fee

Rooney said: "We are extremely pleased that Ibrahim has agreed to join us for the season. He is a quick, athletic and technical winger who will add strength to our forward options.

"He is a player that will excite Argyle fans and I know for a fact they will enjoy watching him play. Ibrahim has joined the squad here in Spain and will immediately get to work as we look to implement our ideas on how we want the team to play going forward."

Cissoko, who is of Guinean descent, played 11 times for Toulouse as they finished 11th in Ligue Un last season, making two starts and nine substitute appearances. He scored in a 2-1 win away to Lorient in late April.

He becomes Argyle's fourth summer signing and their third on a season-long loan, following that of Leeds United midfielder Darko Gyabi and striker Muhamed Tijani, who the Pilgrims have an option to buy from Czech First League club Slavia Prague next summer. They have also brought in Nathanael Ogbeta as a free agent from Swansea City.

Argyle director of football Neil Dewsnip said: "It is a real coup to bring a player of Ibrahim’s quality to Argyle. He had several options this summer, including interest from the Premier League, but he was really keen to join Argyle after speaking with Wayne and the recruitment team.

"He fits the profile of player we are looking to bring to the club as he is young and exciting, but also has excellent technical qualities. I am sure Argyle fans will enjoy watching him play and I am really happy to get another signing done so soon into pre-season."

Toulouse said in a statement on their official website about Cissoko: "For his development and with a view to the upcoming 2024/2025 season, Ibrahim Cissoko will be loaned, without option to purchase, to Plymouth Argyle in the Championship. The opportunity for our winger to improve in England before returning to the club."
