Plymouth ballerinas set for major competition

Two tiny ballerinas are set to compete in a major competition this weekend. Six-year-olds Amelie Bish and Amber-May Swabey have both been learning to dance at Plymouth’s Little Wings Dance School since they were toddlers. Now the two girls are set to represent the school and Plymouth in the All England Dance Regional Finals this weekend.

Amelie, who attends Bickleigh Down Primary School, was aged just one when she began baby ballet classes. Amber-May, who goes to Shakespeare Primary School, started at Little Wings when she was two.

Both dancers will be performing a ballet solo at the All England Regional Finals with a selection of highly talented dancers from across the West Region. The event takes place at the Bacon Theatre in Cheltenham. The top three dancers from their section will go on to compete in the All England Finals in July.

Amelie and Amber-May were selected after excelling in a local dance festival and achieving a high qualification mark. Amber-May said: “I’m looking forward to dancing on stage in front of the audience at regionals and making new friends. I wish all the other dancers the best of luck.”

Amelie added: “I am so excited to be chosen to perform my ballet solo at regionals, it feels like a dream come true as dancing on stage makes me feel so happy.”

Little Wings Dance School celebrated a decade of nurturing young talent in Plymouth last year. Founded by Danielle Nevin who began her own dance journey at the age of three, the school has grown from a passionate dream to a beacon of dance education in the community.

Danielle’s career includes professional stints on the UK tour of 42nd Street and performances as a backing dancer for legends like Gloria Gaynor, Engelbert Humperdinck and Jane Mcdonald. She even had the honour of performing at the Royal Albert Hall. Her passion for dance and dedication to teaching led her to establish Little Wings Dance School in 2013 upon her return to Plymouth.

The school welcomes children from as young as 18 months up to 12 years offering classes in ballet, tap, acrobatics and lyrical dance.
