Voters in Plymouth go to the polls in the May local elections for Plymouth City Council. Here are the candidates for the Southway ward - and why they say you should vote for them.

SOUTHWAY

TONY BLIGH - TUSC

I’m standing because I’m tired of seeing Council Tax go up each year whilst services decline. Southway is a beautiful area for the people here but Councillors don’t seem to spend much time in the ward maintaining it.

Endless potholes litter our streets which I am committed to getting sorted as soon as possible. Reinstating the number 40 bus to Southway for better access would end our isolation. I want more public bins and will scrap garden waste fees.

I want to see youth centres opened to help with anti-social behaviour and to give space to younger people who have no place to go. I would like to see proper investment in the arts too to stimulate some culture and a sense of community which currently feels missing. For an alternative to cuts and endless neglect, vote TUSC on May 2nd.

WILL JONES - CONSERVATIVES

Will is standing for election in Southway ward covering the communities of Southway,Widewell, Tamerton Foliot and Belliver. Will has been a Councillor previously and has six years of Local Government and community campaigning experience. Will is keen to continue the fight to re-open the airport, and is campaigning for a named neighbourhood police officer for the community

HELEN MCCALL - GREEN PARTY

I am a retired Research Scientist who has worked in Environmental Research at Plymouth Marine Laboratories. I was also a Mathematician, Computer Programmer and Engineer. As a scientist I had experience of giving public lectures in Britain and Europe.

Performing Arts Practitioner at various venues such as The Art Of Dance in Mutley, The Barbican Theatre, Theatre Royal and Drum Theatre. In 2003 I served as an Infrastructure Sub-Committee Member on the City Council's Cultural Steering Group. As a Research Scientist I performed International Peer Review on International research in environmental science, and was a referee for a United Nations Intergovernmental Commission.

I am standing as the Green Party candidate for Southway to give residents a say on the issues that matter in their local community. People are looking for a different approach, one that prioritises responsiveness, fairness and sustainability.

If elected, I would like to focus on promoting healthier, more environmentally efficient homes, public buildings and businesses. With the rising fuel prices, this is an important way to improve quality of life for individuals as well as the local economy. I would be a strong voice for promoting and protecting our green spaces, as well as improving low and no carbon transport options to better link Southway to other parts of the city.

KATIE MCMANUS - LIBERAL DEMOCRATS

I strongly believe that Plymouth needs a wider range of voices and ideas on the council to ensure real representation of our community. I have a background in education, equality and diversity, policy, planning and development, as well as experience across the public and private sectors.

I am delighted to be the candidate for Southway ward, where I live, and I hope to ensure that the area receives support and funding for sufficient transport links, environmental and community projects. If elected I would be a strong advocate for improving mental health and youth services for Plymouth. I also have a keen interest in environmental issues and have a Masters in Sustainable Development.

I have been living in the Southway ward for the last 6 years and have enjoyed being part of such a wonderful area and community.

CAROL NEY - LABOUR

Carol Ney is the Labour and Co-operative candidate for Southway ward. Carol has lived in Plymouth since moving from Manchester to take up a nursing role at Derriford Hospital where she still works as a research nurse.

“I feel I have a great deal of experience of helping the public and now feel it’s time to help the people in the ward to access the support they need,” said Carol.

“I have a keen interest in children’s health and am focused on ensuring children and young people in our city achieve their full potential. If I am elected, I will promise to work hard to improve the ward, advocate for constituents and look at ways to improve life in Southway.”

JACQUELINE SANSOM - REFORM UK

I am standing for election as your Reform UK candidate for Plymouth in Southway Ward on 2nd May 2024. For those of you I have not yet managed to speak to personally, this is a little about myself. I am Plymouth born and bred, I have lived in Southway for the past 14 years, have three grown up children and grandchildren, worked 10 years as a classroom assistant with children with learning difficulties, I then worked for B&Q for 23 years.

I enjoy meeting new people and feel I have a good understanding of people and I would love to take the challenge to listen and help people with their problems. I have been talking to local residents and hopefully will be working very closely with Shaun Hooper your prospective Reform UK parliamentary candidate for Moor view. I am hoping you will select me to represent you in Plymouth city council, I will be here to listen and work for Southway and hope to make a strong and positive difference.
