Police called to Parliament over suspicious package for second time in 24 hours

Police are investigating after a series of suspicious packages were sent to Parliament, targeting Muslim MPs.

Officers were called to the parliamentary estate on Tuesday after the discovery, which came less than 24 hours after a previous incident.

It is thought that a total of four packages have been sent to Parliament over the past 24 hours, alongside aggressive letters advertising ‘Punish A Muslim Day’.

Rupa Huq and Rushanara Ali both tweeted that they had received letters, with Ms Huq saying her staff had been given the all clear apart from one who was being checked at hospital after handling an “irritant substance”.

Ms Huq, MP for Ealing Central and Acton, also shared a copy of the ‘Punish a Muslim’ letter, which outlines a ‘points’ system relating to actions taken against Muslims.

She wrote: “Staffer who went to hospital now discharged. There is a definite pattern. It was the letter that did the rounds at weekend and subject of Parliamentary urgent question yesterday which was received. Normal service now resumed – though scary experience”

Mohammad Yasin also received a package on Monday, according to Business Insider, which reported that Afzal Khan also received a package but did not open it.

The incident comes after two items which were later found not to be harmful were found on Monday after reportedly being sent to Mohammad Yasin, Labour MP for Bedford.

A Parliamentary spokesperson told The Independent: “The Met Police are currently investigating suspicious items of mail in Norman Shaw North. We cannot provide any more details at this stage.

“This is further to the two items investigated yesterday, both of which were found to be non-harmful. The Police are investigating the content of the letters to identify any potential links.”
